Beyond the Numbers

The Human Cost of Untreated Trauma

PTSD is never just one person's struggle. It ripples through families, workplaces and communities.

Mental Health

Chronic nightmares, hypervigilance, anxiety and depression that persist long after combat ends.

Family Breakdown

PTSD radiates into marriages and parenting, partners and children carry secondary trauma.

Lost Livelihoods

Veterans unable to hold employment, losing income, identity and purpose.

Social Isolation

Withdrawal from community, friendships and public life, the silent cost of untreated trauma.

Generational Cycle

Untreated trauma passes to the next generation, multiplying the national burden.

Health System Strain

Rising demand on hospitals, rehabilitation services and national mental health infrastructure.

The Ripple Effect: How Untreated Trauma Spreads

Key findings from national research reports - trauma left untreated radiates into homes, roads, and hospitals.

Domestic Violence in the Wake of the "Iron Swords" War

The impact of mental trauma on family and intimate-partner violence

Mental trauma and PTSD are linked to domestic violence in a bidirectional relationship - untreated trauma can manifest as aggression, widening the circle of victims. Since October 2023, welfare services have recorded a sharp rise in domestic violence reports.

Key Findings

65%

more domestic violence reports across the general population in the first six months of the war

30%

rate of emotional and economic abuse in households where both partners serve in the military

×8

Road Accidents Following the "Iron Swords" War

The impact of mental trauma on dangerous driving and road accidents

There is a clear link between trauma exposure and dangerous driving. Post-traumatic symptoms - hyperarousal, attention deficits, road rage, dissociation and avoidance - impair judgment and behavioral control. In 2024, as after the Second Lebanon War in 2007, Israel recorded exceptional spikes in road accidents and fatalities, reinforcing the link between national emergencies and road risk.

Key Findings

21.6%

more road fatalities in 2024 compared to the previous year

4.5

deaths per 100,000 people in Israel in 2024

19.8%

increase in fatal road accidents in 2024 vs. 2023 - despite reduced total mileage

Chronic Illness Following the "Iron Swords" War

The impact of mental trauma on the risk of developing chronic disease

Trauma is a major risk factor for chronic disease. PTSD places continuous strain on the body - sleep disruption, inflammatory processes, weakened immune function and metabolic imbalance - joined by avoidance patterns and self-neglect, creating fertile ground for heart disease, diabetes, lung disease and autoimmune conditions.

Key Findings

~100%

rise in "Broken Heart Syndrome" in the first months after October 7th

35%

rise in acute heart attacks in October-December 2023 compared to 2022

×8

more cardiac events among civilians in southern Israel living near combat zones

20%

rise in strokes attributed to war-related mental stress
